Meaningless! - Ecclesiastes #1

Ecclesiastes 1:2-3

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher;

“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

What profit has a man from all his labor
In which he toils under the sun?

In the place of vanity of vanities, the NIV says “Meaningless!” We all wonder from time to time what the meaning of life is, especially day-to-day life. These verses were written 3,000 years ago, yet just like today it was a world riddled with futility and frustration. We also inherently understand that any measure of success or failure we have in this life will not matter for us after we die.

I’m reminded of the recent death of Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s longtime business partner (a mere month before his 100th birthday). I know nothing personally of this man, except that he was an incredibly successful and well-diversified businessman. His descendants will most-likely lavishly benefit, but how does he personally benefit from his success now? As the old saying goes: You can’t take it with you! The only things that matter after death are what you choose to do and believe that have eternal value.

The main attribute of eternal value is salvation by grace through faith in Christ. As it says in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Also, as believers, God calls us to do what He desires and declares for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” These good works are designed to accomplish God’s purposes for eternity, so let’s desire to earnestly and prayerfully find that work!

In Christ Alone,

Dan
